Our Team

We are an artistic (synchronized) swimming team practicing out of the Johnstown YMCA, dedicated to creating a positive space where people of all ages can learn the art of artistic swimming in the Northern Colorado region (Johnstown, Fort Collins, Loveland, Windsor area).  The goal of our club is to give an opportunity to team members to pursue their goals in the sport – from building fitness to competing at the recreational, state and national levels. Each member of Orcas is supported, valued, and taught to grow in the sport. Our team values emphasize teamwork, discipline, responsibility, acceptance, and leadership. Orcas currently has swimmers at all different ages and skill levels.

What is Artistic Swimming

Artistic (synchronized) swimming (renamed artistic swimming since July 2017 by the global governing body FINA), is a hybrid form of swimming, dance, and gymnastics, consisting of swimmers performing a synchronized routine (either solo, duet, mixed duet, free team, free combination, and highlight) of elaborate moves in the water, accompanied by music.

Artistic swimming demands advanced water skills, requires great strength, endurance, flexibility, grace, artistry and precise timing, as well as exceptional breath control when upside down underwater. During routines swimmers may not touch the bottom of the pool.
